Three arrests, two hospital visits and one job loss during 12-day bender

A Brisbane woman’s 12-day bender saw her arrested three times, taken to hospital twice and losing her job as a real estate agent. Now she’s appeared in court.

A broken heart led Brisbane real estate agent Siahn Curran on a 12-day drug bender that ended in two hospital visits, multiple arrests and the loss of her job, the Sandgate Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

The 28-year-old Curran pleaded guilty to five charges, including driving under the influence, unlawful possession of methamphetamine and drug utensils, and driving under suspension.

Police prosecutor Val Crossley told the court that Curran first came to the attention of police at 9pm on June 13, when she “appeared to be asleep” at the wheel of a parked car on Main St, Kangaroo point.

“Police were suspicious of a dangerous drug so a search was conducted, police arrested her, and she was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital,” Sgt Crossley said.

A few days later, on June 19, police pulled over Curran after they noticed her driving erratically on Brunswick St.

A search of her car revealed .81 grams of meth and a syringe hidden in the centre console, and Curran was taken to the Royal Women’s Brisbane Hospital for further testing, where she tested positive.

Curran’s license was subject to immediate suspension but she got behind the wheel once more on June 25, when she was pulled over during a routine patrol by Pine Rivers police.

Lawyer for the defence David Abrey said Curran had recently broken up with her long-term partner.

“It seems to have exacerbated her situation and led her to go on a bit of a bender,” Mr Abrey said.

“She has no other explanation or excuses other than she made some very poor decisions.

“She has lost her employment as a result of this.”

Magistrate Jennifer Batts said she was surprised to see Curran had amassed so many charges in a short period of time.

“The path you were going down was a pretty serious one,” she said.

“It’s more luck than good management that you or someone else wasn’t hurt, or worse, in these driving instances.”

Curran was sentenced to 14 months of probation and disqualified from driving for three years and six months. The conviction was recorded.
