A much-anticipated new shopping centre near the Bruce Hwy at Burpengary East has edged closer after a sod turning ceremony on Thursday last week marked the start of construction.

The centre, on the corner of Buckley and Uhlmann roads, will be anchored by Woolworths and 12 speciality stores with an al fresco dining area, children’s play space and 238 car spaces.

The 2.2ha site currently included a tennis centre and houses.

Work was expected to be finished by late 2025.

The project was spearheaded by the Lancini Property Group, a well-known North Queensland family which has been developing shopping centres throughout Queensland for 40 years.

Founded by executive chairman Laurence Lancini, the company has a diverse portfolio which also includes commercial offices, large-format retail centres and industrial properties.

“We are thrilled to hold the official turning of the sod for Burpengary East Shopping Centre,” Tomas Lancini said.

“We’ve received overwhelming support from the community for the development which we’re proud to deliver for local residents.

“Overall, the development signifies our commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and supporting the growth of Burpengary East and its surrounding areas.“

Lancini site manager Ryan Richardson said despite rain earlier this year construction was on track.

Woolworths’ spokesman at the sod turning, Anthony Duggan, said customers could also opt for Direct to Boot.

“This modern Woolworths supermarket will create a number of jobs throughout construction, and ongoing, to complement and support a growing region of southeast Queensland,” he said.

Local Councillor, Mark Booth, said the centre was a significant investment in the community’s economic future.

“It will provide provide 260 new and ongoing jobs and contribute to Council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy, which seeks to create more than 100,000 new jobs by 2041.”
