Construction of a new $30 million retail hub in Newport will start next year – more than three years after the plans were first approved by council.
The centre, dubbed Newport Marketplace, will feature multiple retail tenancies, cafes, gym a medical centre, supermarket and a community club.
The council considered 364 submissions, 252 of which were opposing the development, before unanimously approving the application.
Those against the development cited traffic and noise as major concerns.
No work has been done on the site yet but Axis Capital director Brett Gillan said they had been working on the project behind the scenes.
“We will be starting construction in the new year, COVID-19 has made it a longer process than we would have liked,” Mr Gillan said.

He said one of the causes of delays was securing the anchor tenants for the site.
Mr Gillan said he could reveal that the supermarket would be operated by IGA, but remained tight-lipped on other confirmed tenants.
He said the project would be built in three stages – the first being the medical centre, supermarket, food and beverage outlet and a gym.
The community club will be part of stage two.
Construction is estimated to take about 12 months – Mr Gillan hopes it will be open in 2022.
Hundreds of jobs will be created during construction with 100-200 jobs being supported once the retail centre opens.
In the three years since the application was approved Stockland’s Newport estate has greatly expanded with the opening of a new vertical retirement village, new townhomes and plenty of new homes built.
Mr Gillan said the growth was “tremendous” and the new focus had to be on providing retail and services for these residents.
“Tenants we have been talking to are really excited about the centre and Newport and eager to get to the next stage and looking at operations and taking possession on site,” Mr Gillan said.
