A popular restaurant north of Brisbane is in its final days with a major development including two fast food outlets and a gym forcing its controversial closure.
Owners of Beardy’s Bar and Kitchen at Kippa-Ring, Ross and Lee Willson, announced the restaurant was closing just five years after it launched in 2017.
The news has left local residents devastated after the bearded man logo became a well-known symbol for customers who came from all over southeast Queensland to taste their burgers.
“It is with great sadness that we advise that the site where Beardy’s is located is going to be developed into more fast food chains,” the Willson brothers’ Facebook post said.
The restaurant had risen quickly in popularity despite operating for a short time and was even voted in the top three for people’s choice for the best burgers in Brisbane.
Many loyal customers showed their support on social media.
“Take my house, make it Beardys,” James Flasksett said on Facebook.
The post received hundreds of comments all agreeing they would travel anywhere for their Beardy’s fix.
“We'll come buy Beardy’s from you anywhere it’s selling, a van, a house, whatever it takes to support our delicious most favourite restaurant for burgers in Brisbane,” one facebook user said.
Others joined in the fight against fast food chains moving into the site.
“Devastated for you guys... and we will not as a family be supporting the fast food chains that replace our much loved Beardy's on that site,” one Facebook comment said.
Ross Willson said the expected closure date was June 1, giving them limited time to find a new venue.
“We are actively trying to find a new premises as we have a great team of staff and I’d love to keep them all employed, but just like the housing market the commercial side is quite scarce,” he said.
“Fingers crossed we find something soon as just like our staff we also have bills and mortgages to pay so we need something.”
One of the fast food store developments reportedly a new Guzman Y Gomez store.
The bowling alley next door to Beardy’s is also reportedly set to be replaced with a new gym.
