Neighbours of a home which caught fire after it was struck by lightning during last night’s flurry of thunderstorms have recalled their fear as they waited through the eye of the storm.
Firefighters, police, paramedics and Energex crews were sent to Daniel Court in Scarborough, north of Brisbane, about 9pm after reports of a house fire.
A QFES spokeswoman said crews entered from the roof and battled the blaze in the ceiling.
Fearful neighbours looked out from their homes as their street was surrounded by a repetitive barrage of lightning strikes, seemingly every second according to one resident.
One neighbour, who was worried the lightning was hitting his carport, said he and his partner could smell the nearby house fire as it erupted.
“It was so loud, the light coming through was insane,” the neighbour said.
“Lightning strikes every second.
“It was isolated for a while and we were the eye of the storm.”
Another neighbour said that following last night’s events, lightning had struck homes on the street a total of three times in the past 40 years — two in the past two years.
“I wouldn’t say we’re notorious, just unlucky,” the neighbour said.
“At 9pm we heard two big bangs.
“This house was struck 40 years ago and two Christmases ago the house next door.
“The electrical smell of last night’s fire, even with the windows closed was intense.
“You could really smell burning but no real flames.”
The QFES spokeswoman said a crew gained entry to the ceiling and quickly extinguished the fire.
QFES confirmed there were people in the home when it caught alight and that Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics attended the scene.
Paramedics treated one woman aged in her 50s for minor injuries, before taking her to Redcliffe Hospital for observation in a stable condition.
