Standstill traffic on a major southeast Queensland highway has mostly cleared after two crashes caused major delays on Monday.

By 5:30pm the traffic chaos on the Bruce Highway had reduced to delays under 5 minutes southbound between Caboolture and Northlakes.

Earlier Motorists heading in both directions on the Bruce Highway were experiencing major delays travelling northbound and southbound between Beerwah to Strathpine, after crashes at Coochin Creek and Caloundra Road at Nicklin Way.

Two adult females were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in stable conditions after a car crashed into the concrete centre barrier on the Bruce Highway at Coochin Creek, at 11.10am.

Then at 12.34pm a car and motorbike collided, with the rider, an adult male treated and transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with a broken leg.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed the collision has blocked Caloundra Road into Nicklin Way, impacting traffic as of 1.05pm.

The traffic was described as a “car park” at 1pm, with “no cars moving” on the southbound section of the highway.

The major delays also comes after visitors to Australia Zoo were queuing in 30-degree heat as they waited for transport to the tourist attraction from an overflow car park.

One visitor to the zoo said they had to queue at the overflow carpark to get into another queue for the bus.

Zoo patron Scott Latimer, of the Gold Coast, said he had visited the tourism mecca three or four times and had never seen it so busy.

He said his family had travelled from the south along Steve Irwin Way and were stuck in traffic about 1.7km from the zoo entrance.

The advice from RACQ public policy head Michael Kane yesterday was for motorists to “pack your patience” and try to travel outside of peak times.

Australia Zoo has been contacted for comment.
