A violent Moreton Bay criminal on parole freaked out when he caused a traffic accident, attempting to hand-off a satchel bag brimming with methamphetamine, other drugs and $25,000 to a complete stranger, a court has heard.
Kallangur man Andrew Mark Paynter, 31, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday to six drug offences.
They included possessing multiple types of drugs, including a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, and property suspected of being the proceeds of a drug offence.
The court heard the offences were uncovered following a traffic incident at MacDonnell Rd, Margate, about 2pm.
According to Queensland Police, Paynter’s silver sedan collided with a parked trailer, forcing it to crash into a parked car.
Freaking out, Paynter attempted to hand a green satchel to a female passer-by.
The court heard this bag was stuffed full of $25,000 cash, 5.2g pure meth, 27 oxycodone tablets, 30 Diazepam tablets, and digital scales.
He was arrested and has spent the intervening period, a total of about 14 months, remanded in pre-sentence custody.
Paynter had only recently been released on parole at the commission of the current offences, the court heard.
On October 25, 2019, Paynter was sentenced in Maroochydore District Court to three years’ imprisonment for offences including armed robbery, threats, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
On that occasion, he was granted immediate parole eligibility, having spent 465 days remanded in pre-sentence custody.
Paynter’s previous sentence expires on July 17, at which point he will be released on 18 months’ probation, following Judge Helen Bowskill’s sentence yesterday.
