A young Brisbane man with “dormant pedophilic urges” sent and received a series of disgusting images via the social media application Kik, featuring children as young as one being raped, a court has heard.

Corinda man Fox Edward Kay, 24, pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court on Monday to five drug and child-abuse material offences.

They included using a carriage service to transmit child exploitation material (CEM), possessing CEM, and possessing cannabis, a bong, grinder and scales.

The court heard the offences came to light following a police search warrant executed at Kay’s Corinda address on July 7 last year.

Police seized Kay’s mobile phone, on which they discovered about 50 images depicting CEM.

They further discovered Kay had been using the Kik social media application to trade vile child-abuse material with another user.

The court heard Kay sent seven batches of images, at least one batch of which depicted a girl aged one being raped by an adult male.

Kay repeatedly asked the other user for videos and images featuring girls younger than the ones he had been provided, specifically asking for depictions of young girls’ vaginas.

When questioned by police, Kay admitted to having been using methamphetamine “all day every day” for several months following a break-up in October 2019, which led him to do “things he would normally not”.

He “couldn’t control himself”, the court heard, even though he knew searching for and transmitting the CEM was wrong.

Defence counsel Benedict Power told the court his client had since kicked the drugs and had attended 18 psychology sessions to rehabilitate himself.

A court report prepared on Kay’s behalf concluded he had “dormant pedophilic urges” which came to the fore after drug use.

Kay was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment suspended after serving two months, conditional upon him entering into a $500, two-year good-behaviour bond.

He was also placed on two years’ probation.
