A Logan woman’s shameful attack on a hospital employee north of Brisbane left the worker fearful and anxious, a court has heard.
Amber Karalee Laurie, 20, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Friday, September 29 to two counts of serious assault of a person performing lawful duty.
The court heard the Eagleby woman was at a hospital in Redcliffe on September 7, 2021 when she spat on a security staffer who was fortunately wearing personal protective equipment.
Ms Laurie also flicked blood onto the worker from an open wound on her hand as well as kicking and scratching police officers.
In a victim impact statement tendered to the court, the staffer said they had to undergo disease testing which affected their personal life.
“I’m a security officer with the hospital and due to the assault I had to undergo a bunch of disease tests,” they said in the statement.
“For three months I did not know the results and I became hyper-vigilant about being assaulted at work.
“I had to be careful when I was affectionate with my partner and it created anxiety with my work performance.”
The court heard Ms Laurie battled mental health problems and sometimes acted in anger without thinking.
She lived in Eagleby but planned to move to the Sunshine Coast with her mother.
Judge Bernard Porter said assaults on workers trying to do their job were unacceptable.
“You need to treat other people as humans and have empathy,” he said.
“A number of people were just trying to do their jobs and were subject to your contempt.
“This was pretty extreme behaviour and you’ve got to make the right decisions to avoid this happening again.”
Ms Laurie was sentenced to 12 months’ probation. No conviction was recorded.
