A 21-year-old Redcliffe man has been sent back to jail after attempting to break into a unit less than two weeks after being released on parole.

Hayden Kirk Howton was arrested by Redcliffe Police at about 4am this morning.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Tim Clare told the court Howton attempted to break into a unit through a glass door on May 18, but was disturbed by someone and fled the scene.

Howton was arrested a short time later and then released on bail.

Part of the bail conditions required him to report to Redcliffe Police Station three times a week.

Sgt Clare said Howton did not report between May 20 and 29.

Police located Howton, in a car at Rothwell, at 3.50am this morning and arrested him again.

Howton, via his lawyer, pleaded guilty to both charges in Redcliffe Magistrates Court this morning.

Magistrate Bucknall said it was not the first time Howton had found himself in trouble.

“His (criminal) history is littered with breach of bail offences, some drug offences and fail to appears,” Magistrate Bucknall said.

“On May 9, 2017, he was convicted of attempted robbery with actual violence.

“He was given a probation order of two years and 100 hours of community service, which he breached.

“He was then re-sentenced on those charges to 14 months, suspended for 18 months and he breached that sentence.”

Magistrate Bucknall said Howton was sentenced in the Brisbane District Court on April 8 and was on parole on May 8.

“He was convicted in (Redcliffe Magistrates) court on April 6 for a breach of bail and given a parole eligibility date of May 5 – within two weeks he is back trying to break into someone’s unit,” Magistrate Bucknall said.

“This bloke doesn’t get it.”

Magistrate Bucknall said previous sentences had not curbed Howton’s offending and a clear message needed to be sent.

Howton was sentenced to nine months in relation to the attempted break and enter offence.

Due to his “atrocious” history Howton was also sentenced to three months imprisonment for breaching his bail conditions.

Magistrate Bucknall set his parole release date for September 1, 2020.
