A young Logan man from a “good” family subjected his on-off girlfriend to a day of horrific violence fuelled by his “irrational jealousy”, a court has heard.

Loganlea man Mikhail Kassiou, 22, pleaded guilty to five offences in Beenleigh District Court on Monday.

The offences, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count each of choking, making threats and breaching a domestic violence order, all stemmed from a 36-hour paranoid rampage on December 8-9 last year.

The court heard the offences of two assaults and choking occurred at an address in Loganlea, beginning in the midmorning.

Kassiou worked himself into a rage by convincing himself the victim was texting other boys.

He told her to “sit in the corner”, upon which he struck her to the left side of her face, causing swelling and bruising.

She tried to explain that she hadn’t been texting anyone else, which led to a further flurry of blows to her “face, back and stomach”.

All the while, Kassiou was calling the victim a “stupid bitch” and “dumb whore”, the court heard.

Kassiou then grabbed her with two hands around the throat and lifted the victim by the neck so her feet were not touching the floor, causing her to pass out.

When she woke a short time later, she was lying on the bed and Kassiou was seated on a dining-room chair at the other end of the room.

The court heard the pair “got on for a period” in the afternoon until about 7.30 or 8pm, when tensions flared again after Kassiou again brought up the imagined text messages.

This led to a further punch to the victim’s face which caused her left eye to swell entirely shut.

Kassiou called an ambulance at this stage and when the victim woke about 6am on December 9, 2019 in Logan Hospital, he was sitting by her bedside.

“If you say anything I’ll kill you,” Kassiou is said to have told her.

He was arrested a short time later when police attended the hospital.

The court heard Kassiou came from a “good family” where both parents are employed, his father owning a plumbing business, and his two younger siblings have never been in trouble with the law.

He was educated to Year 10 at Loganlea State High School but began using drugs at age 14 before spiralling into addiction.

The court heard this is Kassiou’s third period of incarceration and by far his longest, having spent nearly one year behind bars since the wicked assault.

He was on parole at the time of committing the current offences.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Kassiou was driven by “irrational jealousy” and noted women were free to be friends with whoever they wished and they couldn’t be “controlled” as Kassiou attempted to.

Kassiou was handed a three-year head sentence and will be eligible for parole on December 27.
