An argument over ‘dangerous’ riding on e-scooters turned into an out-of-control street brawl, when a father and son teamed up to brutally attack three strangers in a park.

Zane Steven Cameron, 21, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Thursday, November 23 to grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm in company and common assault.

The court heard that on November 16, 2020 Marsden man Cameron was travelling to an IGA in Crestmead with two friends on e-scooters when he encountered a frustrated driver.

The driver was angry at their manner of driving on the scooters and confronted them at the shop.

The court heard the woman grabbed a pole and chased them into the park while yelling, before neighbours came to assist.

Cameron phoned his dad who then arrived and allegedly escalated the conflict.

“I’ve called my dad, youse’ are all f----d”, said Cameron to the group in the park.

Cameron’s father allegedly punched the woman in the face and kicked the man in the side.

Cameron then punched the other neighbour and jumped on his head as the man protected his face, the woman came to his aid and the group started swinging fists at her.

The man suffered fractures to his wrist and a hemorrhage and the woman had bruising to the jaw and chin.

Crown prosecutor Samantha O’Rourke said imprisonment was not a last resort for violent acts of this nature.

“This was gratuitous street violence and needs to be met with punishment by the courts,” she said.

The court heard Cameron worked at Costco and had no criminal history.

His father was charged for the same offending and his matters were listed for trial.

Judge Paul Smith considered making Cameron serve an actual custodial term of imprisonment but suspended the sentence.

“This is a very regrettable case but wasn’t a completely unprovoked attack,” he said.

“I think you are remorseful for this and because of your young age I won’t make you serve an actual period of imprisonment.”

Cameron was sentenced to three years prison, wholly suspended and placed on probation for two years

He was also ordered to pay $6000 in compensation to the victims within 18 months.
