A 22-year-old Brisbane man was high on drugs when he rammed a stolen car headfirst into a marked police vehicle during a failed getaway at Eight Mile Plains, the Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday.

Jai’aaron Michael Robson pleaded guilty to nine charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault and evading police.

According to the police prosecutor, Robson was driving a stolen car along Logan Rd just after 10pm on October 4 when police attempted to intercept him.

Robson pulled into a nearby service station and was soon blocked in by the police car, which parked directly in front of him.

While the officers were inside their car, Robson made a desperate and deliberate attempt to escape by putting his foot on the accelerator and launching the stolen car headfirst into the police car, causing significant damage to the bonnet.

The police officers jumped out of the car and rushed to Robson’s drivers side door, instructing him to remove himself from the vehicle.

Robson refused and instead rammed the police car again, causing an estimated $7000 worth of damage.

He was arrested and taken into custody, where he has remained for 185 days.

During his sentencing Robson also pleaded guilty to a similar offence a year earlier on November 3, 2019.

The court heard on that occasion Robson led police on a chase in another stolen vehicle, only stopping when his car was hit by several tyre deflation devices.

Defence lawyer Katherine Hanson of Gilmore Lawyers told the court Robson acted out partially due to the unresolved grief of his mother’s drug overdose in October 2019, and his younger brother’s death of a fatal stab wound he sustained on Australia Day of 2020.

“He’s struggled very much in dealing with those deaths,” Ms Hanson said.

“That time of year is very difficult for him.”

Ms Hanson noted Robson, who has amassed an eight page criminal history in the five years since he turned 18, has never held gainful employment.

On Robson’s Facebook page, he lists his occupation as a “criminal” and states he is a “well-known car thief”.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the dangerous operation, 18 months imprisonment for the unlawful use of a motor vehicle, 12 months imprisonment for the assault, three months imprisonment for evading police, all to be served concurrently with immediate eligibility for parole.

Robson was disqualified from driving for a total of three years and three months.

Convictions were recorded.
