‘It gave me confidence’: Recovering ice addicts open up on addiction

A 19-year-old ice addict from Daisy Hill has been sentenced to prison for stealing more than $19,000 worth of computers, jewellery and phones from a Carindale home.

Seth Glyndwyr Morris pleaded guilty to 10 charges, including three counts of break and enter, three counts of stealing and wilful damage at the Beenleigh Magistrates on Thursday.

The court heard the most significant of the charges involved the lucrative burglary of a home at Carindale on December 27, less than a month since he was released from prison on parole.

Magistrate Louise Shephard noted the huge value of Morris’ haul, which was valued at $19,237.

The court heard Seth Morris has been addicted to ice since he was 14YO.

“There was a lot of property taken, including four computers, four Apple iPads, two Apple iPhones, jewellery, cameras … the list goes on,” she said.

Morris was further implicated in a prison riot at Arthur Gorrie during the COVID-related lockdown of September 2020.

The court heard Morris engaged in the riot by breaking a window and setting fire to his bedding.

Lawyer Gary Wooler from GD Lawyers told the court his client grew up in a chaotic household, where he was exposed at a young age to dangerous drugs, homelessness, criminal behaviour and violence.

Morris began using cannabis at just 11-years-old, then progressed to methamphetamine use and dropped out of school by the age of 12.

By the age of 14, he was addicted and using ice daily.

“It’s quite horrific,” Mr Wooler said.

Morris, who appeared at court via video link from prison, has served 83 days in custody since his arrest last year.

Magistrate Shephard sentenced him to a further 18 months with a parole eligibility date of May 1.
