Shylamaire Kwan Taylor, 19, pleaded guilty in district court on Tuesday to a count of torture and deprivation of liberty.

The court heard the victim was a 47-year-old man who had been renting a room in Taylor’s mum’s home in Beenleigh.

Taylor burst into his room late at night and began waving a knife in his face on April 1, 2021.

The court heard Taylor challenged him on allegations of inappropriate conduct towards one of her family members, but she’s since acknowledged there had been a “misunderstanding.”

The court heard the victim was confronted by eight of Taylor’s friends who were waiting in the hallway.

One allegedly used a phone charger cord to tie his hands before they took him to a shed in the backyard.

The court heard he was tied to a chair with a long yellow nylon rope and then the group, including Taylor, began to punch, kick and stomp on him.

The man began screaming and someone from the group allegedly placed a sock in his mouth and wrapped duct tape around his head to hold it in place.

The court heard he slumped over and fell to the ground, but the group continued to stomp and punch his body and one of them struck him with a croquet bat.

He was then allegedly picked up from the ground, untied from the chair and the rope around his arms was strung over a rafter in the roof, forcing his hands to be held above his head.

The court heard a co-offender directed him to kneel down in front of the group and they all began punching and kicking him to the back and chest.

A member of the group then allegedly began recording this on his mobile phone and another member used a croquet bat to hit the complainant’s head and feet.

The court heard the incident in the shed lasted two hours and the 47-year-old suffered multiple fractures to his ribs and fractures to parts of his vertebrae.

Judge Amanda McDonnell said the offending occurred while Taylor was on probation.

“It was obvious you were a committed and active participant in the offending,” she said.

“It was a particularly vicious and prolonged attack by a number of people in this vigilante-style behaviour.

“You now accept there was a misunderstanding in relation to your motivation.”

Taylor’s lawyer said his client had been using drugs since a young age after being sexually assaulted by a group of men and developing PTSD.

He said she was now determined to stay off drugs and was undertaking an anger management program.

Taylor was sentenced to four years jail with a parole eligibility date set on August 2, 2022.

The 319 days she spent in pre-sentence custody was declared as time served.
