Kiana Chloe Dalton, 26, of Boronia Heights, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed.

The court heard Dalton used a metal bottle to strike a child, who was not her own, about five times in the stomach and groin area on March 7, 2020.

Police prosecutor Sgt Stephen Cochrane said Dalton appeared to have “just snapped” after the child had been crying all morning.

The victim’s mother later discovered bruising on the child’s body and took the child to a hospital.

Dalton’s lawyer said during the time of the offence, his client was struggling with mental health problems, which included bipolar disorder.

He referred to a report that concluded that while her capacity was a “little impaired”, she was still culpable for the offending.

“Unfortunately, this offence has occurred against the backdrop of some form of episode in relation to that,” he said.

She was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with an immediate parole release date.
