A ‘misunderstanding’ between a Logan sparkie and a Fortitude Valley nightclub ‘glassie’ over the female toilets at the venue ended in chaos and broken teeth.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday, July 12 that Ronan James Bond was drunk at popular Fortitude Valley nightclub the MET, when the fight happened.

The 22-year-old Bahrs Scrub electrician attended the venue with his partner on December 4, 2021.

The court heard Bond saw a nightclub employee going into the female bathrooms and told him to “get out of there, you can’t go in there”.

The MET employee responded by telling Bond he worked there.

The court heard Bond then ran at the victim, grabbed him by the shirt and wrestled him outside the bathroom in a heavily crowded walkway.

Bond then punched the victim in the face, breaking his teeth.

The victim told police he tasted blood, could feel cracks in his teeth and had to pay more than $500 in dental bills as a result of the assault.

Bond pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and had no prior criminal history or run-ins with the law since the incident.

His defence lawyer, David Gilmore, said the attack was out of character.

“The fight started from a misunderstanding. He thought the victim was going into the girls’ toilet and looking around,” he said.

“There is a reason why he did it, not a good reason but he is not somebody who starts alcohol-fuelled fights.

“He is extremely apologetic and grateful there are no injuries.”

Magistrate Terry Duroux said the violence was concerning but the incident was not akin to coward punches or serious alcohol-fuelled violence.

“The violence is concerning and in my experience nothing good happens after 11pm in a nightclub in the Valley,” said Magistrate Duroux.

Bond was fined $1000 and ordered to pay restitution of $500 to the victim.

No conviction was recorded.
