Nath Seng charged with eight domestic violence offences

A Logan man charged with choking, assaulting and threatening a woman will have a further wait to discover if he retains his freedom in the community.

Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

A Logan man who allegedly choked, assaulted and threatened a woman told his defence barrister just days before his sentence he was suffering a “psychiatric” episode, leading to what may be a lengthy day.

Slacks Creek man Nath Seng, 33, is charged with eight offences of domestic violence, which include three counts of common assault, three counts of choking, and one each of wilful damage and threatening violence.

The offences are all alleged to have occurred on August 19 last year at an address in Milton.

Mr Seng, was to enter a plea and proceed to sentencing hearing in Brisbane District Court last week, but defence counsel James Godbolt told the court a piece of eleventh-hour information had scuppered that plan.

Mr Godbolt said Mr Seng’s defence team had struggled to conference with their client, only tracking him down last week, at which point he told them that “around the time of the offending behaviour and in the months preceding”, he suffered a “psychiatric” episode.

This led to him becoming an inpatient at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Mr Godbolt said, for eight days.

The defence, therefore, was applying to adjourn the sentence “so records can be obtained”.

“There might need to be a report commissioned,” Mr Godbolt told the court.

His request for the charges to be mentioned next Friday was granted by the court.

“(We’ll know then) whether we are able to proceed to sentence quickly or whether a report is necessary,” Mr Godbolt said.

Mr Seng’s bail was enlarged.
