Meadowbrook man Jasiah Zacary Wells assaults former partner’s boyfriend

After being sexually shamed on social media and catching his former partner in bed with an NRL hopeful, a Logan man brutally bashed the new boyfriend with a household item, a court has heard.

A jealous ex-lover brutally bashed his former partner’s new boyfriend five times in the head with a heavy, brass oil lamp after being belittled and sexually shamed on social media and then catching the pair in bed together.

Meadowbrook man Jasiah Zacary Wells, 25, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on November 23 to grievous bodily harm with a weapon, assault occasioning bodily harm and wilful damage.

The court heard that on November 11, 2018 Wells went to the woman’s home while intoxicated at 6am and caught the pair in bed together.

He picked up a large, brass oil lamp and hit the man forcefully five times in the head after punching and kicking him as well and destroying the woman’s mobile phone.

A witness to the scene described the attacks as “big power hits” and said he could see a lot of blood.

The court heard the victim was an aspiring NRL player and represented Queensland at under 16s level but after suffering lacerations to the face and requiring multiple surgeries on a broken jaw, his ambitions to play football professionally were ruined.

After the attack Wells returned home and told his mother he didn’t mean it and he just snapped.

Wells’ defence told the court the victim had been belittling and sexually shaming Wells on Instagram and other forms of social media leading up to the attack.

Judge David Kent KC noted Wells had not reoffended since his arrest in 2018 and said the injuries to the victim could have been a lot more severe.

“This is a bad set of injuries and it is just luck this man is not dead,” he said.

Wells was sentenced to four years and three months in prison with an immediate parole release date. He had already served 15 months in pre-sentence custody.
