A Christmas Day lunch ended in disaster when an argument broke out and a man punched a wall, headbutted his ex-partner and then later stabbed her with a sword.

Eagleby resident Adrian George Quirke, 44, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on November 18 to assault occasioning bodily harm with a weapon, common assault and two counts of wilful damage (domestic violence offences).

The court heard that on Christmas Day 2021 at 4pm, Quirke was with his former partner in Eagleby when an argument broke out.

He punched and damaged the wall and then headbutted the victim to the jaw.

He then held her down, pushed down on her chest and throat as she was gasping for air, there was a struggle and she eventually broke away.

The court heard that three days later on December 28, Quirke returned with a sword and stabbed her, causing scratches to her right arm.

Judge David Kent KC said using a weapon such as this was an aggravating feature of the attack but he believed the defendant was remorseful for his actions.

“You wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of it,” he said.

“You were under stresses at the time and I am reassured you are genuinely remorseful.

“That is something which sadly happens less often than it should in these courts.”

Quirke had already served 325 days in custody since his arrest and was sentenced to two years in prison, with an immediate parole release date.
