A highly respected former teacher at Hills International College in Jimboomba who threatened to kill his wife by pushing a loaded Glock pistol into her mouth has faced court.

Holmview man Matthew Viliamu, 52, pleaded guilty in district court at Beenleigh on Wednesday to assault occasioning bodily harm, dangerous conduct with a weapon, failing to properly secure a weapon and two counts of common assault in relation to a frightening domestic violence incident.

The court heard the father of three got into a violent altercation with his partner of 20 years on June 28, 2020, after she had admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a co-worker the previous night.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said during sentencing, Viliamu had been drinking at the house for what seemed to be a while, waiting for her to come home.

“You pulled her off the couch, pushing her to the ground,” he said.

“The head landing on the tiled floor caused a large bump on the back of her head.

“She was dizzy and disoriented. She was bleeding from her mouth and nose.”

The court heard Viliamu then called the ambulance and the couple spent the night in Logan hospital before returning home the next day.

When they got back home, Viliamu was demanding details about the co-worker which the woman refused to provide.

He then told their children what had happened and followed his partner to a house at the back of the property.

He then disappeared for a short period of time and returned with a Glock pistol and loaded the magazine with bullets.

“You said to the complainant: ‘Look at what you’ve done to the family. You don’t deserve to live!’” Judge Chowdhury said.

“You finished loading the Glock and moved over to the complainant, pulled her hair and held a gun to her head.

“She was crying and you said: ‘There’s nothing that can make this right. The only way is to get rid of this hurt and this pain.

“You released the complainant after five minutes and began pacing around the house, yelling at her while holding the gun.

“You disgracefully put the gun in her mouth, imitating oral sex, while threatening her and berating her.

“You threatened to kill numerous times throughout the day while putting a gun to her head and the back of her neck.”

The court heard Viliamu had a licence for the gun but it was not stored securely when police later arrived.

The court heard the 52-year-old moved to Australia with his family from New Zealand in 2004.

He also brought over his elderly parents and his two disabled sisters who he cares for.

Judge Chowdhury said he found the facts “quite extraordinary” given Viliamu’s background of being a “caring family man” and “highly respected” PE and English teacher at a high school.

A spokesman from Hills International College said Viliamu was immediately dismissed after they became away of the charges through the Queensland College of Teachers last year.

The court heard Viliamu had a minimal criminal history and had spent 434 days in pre-sentence custody, which was marked as time served.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with an immediate parole release date.
