Marsden State High School tonight night scored an historic first win, 34-24, on their new home field when they beat Wavell SHS in the Langer Cup schoolboy rugby league.

Marsden scored two late tries in two minutes to cement a come-from-behind victory.

Tyrone Sau and Colin Tui scored the match winners in the final five minutes

It was a thrilling clash with Wavell launching out to an 18-0 advantage in the first half before Marsden wrestled momentum back.

Wavell look unbeatable as their massive forward pack took advantage of a weight of possession.

The turning point came in the first half when Marsden were able to capitalise on a shift in possession bought on by two dropped balls by Wavell, and also a penalty which was waved the way of the home side.

With a meree sniff of a chance, Marsden seized their chances.

First TC Roberto powered over for Marsden, then Colin Tui swept down the sideline for a try and in a flash it was 18-12, still to Wavell.

Another massive moment on the cusp of halftime came when Marsden halfback Konrad Tu’ua snatched an intercept just metres from his own line when Wavell were pressing for the first time in a long time.

Instead of Wavell scoring, Tu’ua raced down field, pursued by his opposite halfback Will Parslow who caught his rival, but not enough to prevent Tu’ua unloading to Josh Downs support who scored.

Tu’ua had his goal kicking boots on which also helped Marsden.

Indeed Marsden scored 22 points in row to take the lead early in the second half when Tu’ua scored a brilliant individual try.

Midway through the second half Wavell were back in front after giant second rower Caleb Esera unloaded to his centre Izaak Onn in the corner.

Wavell goal kicker Louis Maritz was ice cool under pressure to land the sideline conversion and put Wavell back in front 24-22, but there was no denying the home side in a fantastic match played in great spirit.
