Marsden State High School won four matches but Wavell SHS talent still shone brightly

Marsden State High School won four school rugby league matches played against Wavell SHS during yesterday’s Mental Health Round, but Wavell’s talent still shone through during a fantastic Mental Health Round of football in Logan.

Marsden State High School won four school rugby league matches played against Wavell SHS during yesterday’s Mental Health Round, but Wavell’s talent still shone through.

In a historic first ever round of matches played at Marsden SHS’s new oval, Marsden won the Langer Cup, the senior girls clash, the Year 7 match, and Walters Cup encounter. The Langer Cup reserves was called off early due to an injury.

But Wavell SHS claimed the Hancock Cup year 9 game 18-16 and the Renouf Cup clash

It was a gutsy win by Wavell which stemmed the tide of the afternoon after Marsden hooker Tyree Bowman scored first.

After that first try, Wavell five-eight Karl Olopu injected confidence into his team with a powerful individual thrust close to the line to score.

Wavell then gathered some momentum courtesy of big forward Jermaine Pangai who caused no end of trouble.

Pangai unloaded in the lead-up to a try, knocked opponents over carrying who were simply trying to tackle him and scored himself.

When Wavell centre Bristow Murray scored on the back of his pack going forward, the visitors led 18-4.

Then came a Marsden resurgence with Eli Tuli scoring just before halftime and Brayden Perano crossing after the break to set up a grand stand finish.

The match went to the wire with Marsden kicking ahead and chasing after full-time, only for Wavell to scramble and save the day.

The Walter Cup (year 10) clash won 16-6 by Marsden featured a superb performance from Marsden front rower Marley Lupeomanu.

His leg drive in contact and his work rate was one of the highlights of all seven matches.

Most impressively it was not his size that advantaged him.

While he is a solid lad, he was effective with power and effort and not just bulk.

Lupeomanu., Junior Tuangatau and Lance Fualema prowled around the middle for Marsden, playing an upbeat game and riding the momentum their side created.

Wavell’s forwards lacked no effort and the 10 point margin did not reflect the contest.

Wavell were willing in every moment of the game, but occasional handling error under mined their brave endeavours.

Following one such error powerful Marsden centre Andre Hurae blasted his way through for a 35m solo try from a scrum.

But it was appropriate Wavell closed the gap to 16-6 because they did not deserve to be beaten to nil.

Slippery Wavell winger Jordan Tut Chapman produced a beautiful in and away after a great pass from Marley Fisher.

The year 7 encounter saw Marsden win 28-6, but Wavell still produced many good patches and there is plenty for the coach to work on.

Marsden SHS gained an early foothold when Daniel Mika and Quinten Teuila crossed for the opening two tries.
