A 19-year-old woman has faced court after she set her friend’s mother’s car on fire “for no real reason”.

Loganlea’s Jessica Colleen Crawley, 19, was staying at a friend’s apartment on November 4 in 2021 when she decided to steal the friend’s 61-year-old mother’s car, which was a Holden Captiva, (who lived in the next apartment) and set it on fire.

“Her friend returned (to her apartment) to find the CCTV unplugged and her mother’s vehicle missing,” police prosecutor Ms Land told Beenleigh District Court.

“The next day, on November 4, the defendant was at a party and had taken the complainant’s car.

“She said, “I want it and I’m going to light the c**t on fire at the back of the house”.

“The defendant drove the stolen car to the service station and purchased fuel.

“She then Drove the car behind the complaint’s apartment, poured petrol onto and inside it, and set the car on fire.

“The car was destroyed in the fire.”

Crawley’s lawyer, Cecilia Bernardin, said her client — who pleaded guilty to arson and unlawful use of a vehicle for an indictable offence — had been under the influence of drugs at the time.

“She dropped out of grade eight and started using drugs,” Ms Bernardin said.

“She was unfortunately using methamphetamine at the time and it affected her better judgement.

“She was angry at the complainant because of something she was previously told.

“She accepts that she clearly needs to address that drug issue so she does not end up back where she is.

“She has previously been diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

“She acknowledges that she needs to seek mental health help when she leaves.

“Her mother was also diagnosed with a brain tumour, they don’t know how long she has yet.”

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Crawley had no excuse for her actions.

“This is serious offending,” Mr Chowdhury said.

“You caused just wanton destruction of a car, by fire, for no real reason.

“I know you were probably high on amphetamines but it’s no excuse for what you did.”

Crawford received a head sentence of two years’ jail.

Her 41 days served in pre custody was declared as time served.

She received immediate parole release.

Convictions were recorded.
