A police prosecutor has described the days a woman allegedly spent held captive in a shed as “harrowing” — recounting how she was allegedly beaten and tortured.

Marsden man Hayden Andrew Evans allegedly tortured the woman, beating her over three days while she was trapped in a shed on his property between October 5 and 8 last year.

“He’s allegedly subjected the victim to quite a harrowing experience,” police prosecutor Tahlia Boettcher told Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

“The torture and deprivation of liberty occurred over a three-day period, where he’s continued to assault her and beat her on multiple separate occasions.

“He’s allegedly kicked, kneed, punched and assaulted her with a baton.

“This caused her significant bruising to her legs, face and arms.”

The court heard the Marsden man allegedly choked the woman until she was unconscious, filming the incident on his phone.

“The defendant has held her throat with so much force that she was knocked unconscious,” Ms Boettcher said.

The victim allegedly fled to a nearby property where she sought refuge, before police came.

“Police have actually taken photographs of her quite significant injuries on scene.

“They include extreme swelling to her eye, it was forced closed, heavily bruising to her entire body.

“Her bruises are all colours of the rainbow, they are blue, black, yellow.

“She’s suffered quite significant injuries.”

His lawyer, David Gilmore, said his client, who faces charges including assault occasioning bodily harm, choking/suffocation, deprivation of liberty and possessing dangerous drugs, should be granted bail.

“My client has no history of similar offending in relation to the serious matters,” Mr Gilmore said.

“The offending is also strenuously denied and as a result the matter will go to trial to the high court and there is likely to be a prolonged time before it is dealt with.

“In relation to the allegations they are very much denied.

“My client can and should be granted bail today.”

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy denied Evans bail, agreeing with police prosecution’s submissions.

“The charges are aggravated not only because he was on bail at the time, but because he was subject to parole,” Ms Clohessy said.

“I accept whilst this matter if contested it will need to go to trial, but nonetheless having regard to the complainants statement and photographs of the victims injuries and the scene, the photographs of her injuries, which depict extensive swelling and bruising to her face and legs and other parts of her body, are consistent with her being assaulted the defendant.

“Given the risk of reoffending and the risk of endangering a person, bail is refused.”

Evans’ matter was adjourned for registry committal on May 31 at Beenleigh Magistrates Court.
