A Father of five’s shocking attack on his one-year-old son where he drunkenly threw him against a wall has been revealed in court.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday, July 26, that the 39-year-old Logan man drunkenly attacked his one-year-old son on January 14.

The father of five, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded guilty to common assault and contravention of a domestic violence order.

The court heard that the man had an argument with his partner in Logan while drunk and stormed around the house, looking for something to throw.

He went into his one-year-old son’s bedroom, picked him up and threw him against the wall.

The child hit the wall head first and had bruising, swelling and redness on his head.

The court heard the man then smashed his own television and threw a pot plant on the floor, breaking it.

When questioned by police, the defendant said he did not believe smashing his own television was an act of domestic violence.

Police prosecutor Stephen Cochrane said the child being so young was particularly concerning.

“The attack could be dangerous to a child of that age. There was no provocation and it was purely a random act of violence,” said Sergeant Cochrane.

“The assault involves throwing a one-year-old child. The defendant also has prior convictions for assault occasioning bodily harm.”

The court heard when questioned by police, the father off five said he threw his son towards the bed and did not mean to hit the wall.

“How could a child be hurt by that,” he told police.

The court heard the man was studying law and had issues with alcohol, which was a catalyst for his domestic violence offending.

Magistrate Michael O’Driscoll said he was concerned about the defendant’s conduct.

“Any violence towards a child cannot be tolerated in any court in Queensland,” he said.

“Remaining alcohol free will be a benefit to you and the rest of the community.”

He was sentenced to 12 months prison and immediately released on parole.

The father of five had already served 156 days of pre-sentence custody.
