WATCH: ‘Vicious, cowardly’ moment brothers bash stranger outside Centrelink

Two Logan brothers’ unprovoked bashing of a stranger outside Centrelink, has been caught on camera and labelled “cowardly and vicious” by a magistrate.

CCTV footage outside Centrelink, Logan Central from May 24 was played in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday, July 21 and showed a brutal attack.

The video began with Hayden Potts approaching a stranger on the steps of the Centrelink and then punching him wildly, several times.

Additional footage from outside the busy Centrelink shows a woman hurry a child back indoors as the violence escalated.

He said to the man “what are you looking at you f-----g piece of s--t,” heard the court.

Potts’ brother Jarrod Potts, then got involved and kicked the victim several times in the stomach and chest while he was being held by Hayden.

The court heard Jarrod Potts kneed the victim fives times in the head

The assault was described as a “cowardly, vicious, unprovoked attack on a defenceless stranger” by Magistrate Cameron McKenzie.

The court heard that on May 24 in Edens Landing, the same day as the Centrelink bashing, the Potts brothers approached another stranger and shaped up to him aggressively on the street.

They punched him 20 times, severely injuring his face and popping out his shoulder.

The victim went to hospital with contusions to his face and eye and serious bruising.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Donna Kay said the unprovoked nature of the attack was concerning

“It was a random attack on a stranger and at one point the co-accused said ‘go and get the machete’,” she said.

“There was gratuitous violence which was protracted and they were armed.”

Jarrod Potts, 26, a scaffolder from Marsden, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed in company, going armed as to cause fear and wilful damage.

Hayden Potts, 28, from Edens Landing, also pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed in company.

He was sentenced in Beenleigh Magistrates Court for the same offences on Monday, July 24.

Magistrate Cameron McKenzie said to Jarrod the attacks were extremely concerning and cowardly.

“This was a cowardly, unprovoked vicious attack,” he said.

“The victim was held by the co-accused (Hayden) and while in that defenceless position, you kicked him repeatedly.”

Jarrod and Hayden Potts were each sentenced to 30 months prison, to serve 8 months of actual custody.

They were both given a parole release date of February 24, 2024 and ordered to pay $2000 each in compensation to the victims.
