Kingston’s Angela Christine Neilsen ‘fortunate’ to avoid tragedy while on drug drive bender

A 44yo woman has shattered her 14-year clean record after a spate of near deadly drug drives — with the magistrate issuing a warning as he revealed her fate.

The surprising history of meth

A 44-year-old woman who crashed her car twice while on meth was lucky to avoid a third accident and injuring anyone.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday heard Angela Christine Neilsen could have faced much more serious charges if she had hurt someone.

The Kingston woman pleaded guilty to driving with a relevant drug present; possessing dangerous drugs; being in charge of a vehicle while under the influence of liquor and failing to take care in respect of a syringe.

The court was told Neilsen crashed twice while on meth and prescription drugs between May and June last year.

A third crash was avoided when she was discovered asleep and heavily drug-affected behind the wheel at a petrol station.

Police prosecutor Tim Wise said hers was clearly a “story of (recent) drug addiction” after a 14-year absence from criminal offending.

It was noted the defendant also had an otherwise “reasonably good” traffic history.

Acting magistrate Patrick Murphy said Neilsen was fortunate to not have faced court for more serious charges given her lack of control on the road.

The court acknowledged her very dated criminal history and put her offending down to a recent relapse, which she was proactively addressing.

Neilsen was sentenced to nine months’ probation and disqualified from driving for 11 months.

Convictions were recorded.
