Shots fired, wild chase at Shailer Park

A Logan dad who allegedly fired a shotgun during a wild police chase that ended on a roof in Shailer Park has applied for bail in a bid to reunite with his kids.

Mount Warren Park man Kieren Jay de la Cruz, 30, applied for bail in district court at Beenleigh on Wednesday, more than 17 months since the night of his dramatic arrest on a Shailer Park roof.

It is alleged Mr de la Cruz led police on a wild chase in a stolen car and allegedly fired a shotgun during the pursuit on September 12, 2020.

He is charged with eight offences including acts intended to resist/prevent lawful arrest by unlawfully causing any explosive substance to explode, two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle and two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Mr de la Cruz’s lawyers told the court had been in custody for 529 days and was now applying for bail for several reasons.

“He tells me he is reserved to the fact that if he were to be granted bail today that [there is a possibility] he would be returning to custody,” she said.

“He simply instructed us to make this application because he wants time, even only for a short period, to try and secure accommodation at a residential rehab facility, as he’s not getting the full-on support in custody as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s also to see his family, given there haven’t been any visits at the correctional centre due to the lockdowns, and also to manage some personal affairs including property and finances.

“His main concern is to see his children, who he hasn’t seen for some time.”

The court heard Mr de la Cruz had a lengthy criminal history starting in 2008, including six convictions for breaching bail and five convictions for failing to appear.

Judge Jackson refused the application for bail, and the matters were adjourned to be heard again on March 2.
