The grief-stricken family of a mother and son who were killed in a horrific crash in Central West Queensland have revealed the pair were travelling hospital for a breast cancer test before their sudden deaths.

Winton mother Christine Thompson, 72, and her son Michael Thompson, 50, were involved in a fatal single-vehicle traffic crash near Longreach on Wednesday, February 16.

The pair was travelling east in a 4WD along the Landsborough Hwy, 40km west of Longreach, when the driver lost control and their car rolled several times about 9.10am.

Michael, who was driving, died at the scene while Christine was transported to Longreach Hospital where later died.

Tammy Thompson, one of Christine’s three children, said the pair had been travelling to the Longreach Hospital.

“Michael was booked in for an ultrasound because the doctors in Winton thought he might have breast cancer so he was going over to have it checked,” Tammy said.

Tammy said their family was still coming to grips with their sudden deaths.

“I’ve just lost two people who were very important to me and I really have no idea what to say,” she said.

“My mum was a really crafty and creative person. She loved drawing, making things with beads and basically anything she could do with her hands.

“She loved her family and her animals. She had two dogs, who I’m unfortunately finding new homes for.”

“She was there for me when I needed her.”

Tammy said her brother Michael had been caring for and living with their mother in Winton after their father died a few years ago.

“He loved playing video games and tended to keep to himself aside from a few close friends,” she said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Tammy lay her mother and brother to rest and settle their estate, which has so far raised $2000.

Investigations from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing with police appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or has relevant dashcam footage, to contact them.
