Kaed O’Bryan: Teen sentenced for bashing pregnant 18yo woman

A Logan cannabis addict went “off his tree” assaulting a pregnant teen, including hitting her in the stomach, a court has heard.

A Logan teen has been sentenced for bashing a pregnant 18-year-old woman, pinning her against a wall by her neck and hitting her in the stomach while affected by cannabis.

Flagstone man Kaed Makenzy O’Bryan, 19, understood to now be living on Brisbane’s southside, pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court to three counts of common assault and one count of wilful damage.

The court heard the assaults occurred on March 1 last year at an address in Burpengary while O’Bryan was under the influence of cannabis.

During an argument, O’Bryan pushed the woman, who retaliated by hitting him over the head with a pot.

O’Bryan then “went completely off (his) tree”, in the words of Judge Michael Byrne QC, smashing property, pushing the woman into a fridge and holding her by her collarbone, hitting her in the stomach, and holding her by her neck against a wall.

A 14-year-old witness ran next door to alert a neighbour and police were called.

O’Bryan spent 19 days in custody before being granted bail on March 19 last year.

The court heard, in the time between his release and his sentence today, O’Bryan reoffended by breaching his bail multiple times, with convictions being recorded.

Defence lawyer Rijald Hadzalic told the court his client was a “high-achiever” at school who had completed a number of training qualifications, including for personal training and electrical work.

Judge Byrne warned O’Bryan against his cannabis use.

“It creates urge in people to do things they shouldn’t do,” he said.

“Take this as a lesson in what cannabis can make you do.

“Your conduct was absolutely deplorable.

“Went completely off your tree, you lost control.”

O’Bryan was placed on 18 months’ probation.

No convictions were recorded.
