A Logan man left a police officer with concussion and requiring hospital treatment during a violent arrest, a court has heard.

Justin Michael Sandstrom was jailed by a Beenleigh magistrate for causing the concussion of a police officer.

A Logan man left a police officer with concussion and requiring hospital treatment during a violent arrest, a court has heard.

Justin Michael Sandstrom, 33, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday, August 23, to serious assault of a police officer causing bodily harm and obstructing an officer.

The court heard the Tingalpa man was arrested while drunk on July 30 in Logan and violently resisted arrest.

He punched the police officer in the face, causing a cut.

Sandstrom was tasered during the scuffle.

The officer had to visit hospital and required a CT scan, which revealed a concussion.

He was unable to work for several days as a result.

Defence lawyer Hannah Wallace said her client was extremely remorseful for his actions.

“He had a problem with alcohol and had relapsed during this period,” she said.

“He has the support of his partner now and hopes to get back to working once released from custody.”

The court heard Sandstrom worked as a steelworker and had a white card.

He was hoping to continue in that industry once released from prison.

Magistrate Ron Kilner said any attack on a police officer performing their duty needed to be punished.

“Any assault on an officer is a serious matter,” he said.

“If you complied with the police officer you wouldn’t be in this position and if you are unable to handle alcohol, you shouldn’t be drinking.”

“Your history is littered with violent offending and I need to take that into account.”

Sandstrom was sentenced to six months’ prison and will be released on parole on September 23.

He had already served 24 days of pre-sentence custody.
