A 27-year-old father was on his way home from work yesterday when he was involved in a serious crash with a truck — leaving him critically injured.

One side of 27-year-old Flagstone man Justine Devine’s body is “shredded to pieces”, as doctors prepare to undergo the first of many surgeries in response to the horrific crash at Park Ridge yesterday.

Mr Devine remains in a coma at the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he today underwent the first of many surgeries.

His sister Amber, his partner and other family now wait for the loveable larrikin to open his eyes again.

Mr Devine was riding a blue Harley Davidson on Park Ridge Rd yesterday when he collided with a truck at 1.30pm. The incident was so serious it left the road blocked for several hours, as emergency services scrambled to treat him and divert traffic.

Ms Devine said her brother had fractured his whole right leg to the point it’s “shredded to pieces”, suffered a broken jaw and cheekbones as well as a skull fracture and internal bruising.

Expected to be in a coma for several days, there also fears the 27-year-old may suffer vision loss.

Mr Devine, a labourer, is the main breadwinner for his partner and three children aged under five, whom doctors have forbidden to see their father in such a “mashed up” state.

“He had no ID in his wallet so they (emergency services) didn’t know who it was,” Ms Devine said.

“They called the bike’s previous owner to say you’re bike has been involved in an accident.

“He then called Justin’s partner and she hysterically called me.

“We couldn’t call Justin, his phone was snapped in half.

“I called every hospital in the area and everyone said they didn’t have him.

“It was a lot of panic for two-three hours until we found out he was alive.”

Ms Devine said doctors were working to ensure her brother could keep his right leg.

Mr Devine is expected to undergo many plastic and reconstructive surgeries.

“I went to the crash site this morning and I shouldn’t have done that,” Ms Devine said.

“He’s had dirt bikes and road bikes before and he is an experienced rider.

“They’ve gotten him stable; it was touch and go to start with.

“It’s very likely he will pull through.

“As serious as his injuries are, the CT scan revealed his injuries are little better than expected.”

Mr Devine’s partner and family now face an insurmountable emotional and financial toll, with months of surgeries and rehab expected.

Ms Devine has started a GoFundMe in the hope of raising $10,000 – $20,000 to assist with the cost of surgeries, treatment and living and to support Mr Devine’s three young children.

“We don’t know how it happened, what will or won’t be covered at this stage,” Ms Devine said.

“It will be important while his partner and kids deal with their emotions.

“I’m hoping to get $10,000-20,000 to cover rent for the next six months.

“Anything else they can put towards his treatment, going back and forth to hospital, parking and specialists.”

The 27-year-old is described by his sister as larrikin who loved his family, bikes, beers and smoking meats.

“He stirs me up even though I’m the big sister,” Ms Devine said.

“He’s always having barbecues, riding bikes, having a beer and just has a big heart.

“He has banter, he is always silly, a bit of a smartass and cheeky.”
