The Queensland speedway community is in mourning following the shock death of one of the state’s bright young talents after a tragic car crash north of Brisbane.
Jett Lemon suffered critical injuries after the single vehicle crash at Dakabin on July 18, where his Holden Commodore utility hit a power pole on Marsden Rd before 8.30am.
The 18-year-old was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he died from his injuries on July 20.
Mr Lemon, a Kallangur resident who attended Pine Rivers State High School, was a popular member of the speedway community, competing at major events across Queensland and around the country.
He was a member of the Maryborough Speedway Kart Club, who led the list of organisations and people paying tribute to the youngster on social media following his death.
“Sadly today we lost one of our Club Members and Kart drivers Jett Lemon,” the club posted on Facebook.
“We will miss your infectious smile, personality and enthusiasm for Speedway.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kristie, Ryder and your entire family at this difficult time. You will be missed by all. Rest easy mate.”
Echo Park Speedway also posted a tribute to Mr Lemon saying he was only just starting to realise his potential as a racer.
“Jett was always a joy to watch at race meetings and keen to muck around with his fellow racers and mates at speedway,” the post said.
“Going to club and title meetings and watching these young kids get together with such a tight bond has been truly amazing to watch.
“RIP Jett – you were a well liked young man who will be sorely missed.”
Benson Racing Karts also posted and said they were losing a member of their own family.
“We appreciated being part of your racing journey. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kristie, Ryder and your entire family at this difficult time,” they said.
“The entire Benson family will mourn your loss. Race hard mate.”
In a local racing group, Drew Baxter reflected on racing against Mr Lemon.
“Today the world lost a racer and heaven gained a legend,” he said.
“RIP Jett Lemon we raced hard against each other that being all of us at DC racing — fly high as always drive fast and turn left. Our deepest condolences go out to Jett’s family and friends.”
A friend of Mr Lemon’s family has also started a GoFundMe page to help his family cope with the costs after his death, which has raised more than $5900 of a $15,000 goal.
“On Tuesday the 18th of July Jett was involved in a horrific crash where his car had slid out on a rainy day hitting a pole that left him with severe injuries,” Mimi Chirizzi, who started the page wrote.
“Jett had broken both femurs, his arm and two places in his pelvis. Though his injuries were serious, hopes were high as he was likely to make a full recovery.
“In a heart breaking turn of events Jett suffered an embolism post surgery, which led him to be put on life support.
“It’s with an incredibly heavy heart to say that the family had to make the very difficult decision to turn his life support off on Thursday only days later. His shocking and sudden passing has come with immense pain to all those who know and love Jett.
“Jett had only just celebrated his 18th birthday.
“Jett was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He was taken far too soon and our hearts were not ready, rest in peace Jett.
“Funds raised through this page will be used to reduce the financial burden that Jett’s sudden passing has had on his family. It will help support the immediate needs of his mother and siblings during this difficult time.”
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision from the area to come forward.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
