A vigilante fired multiple gunshots in a Rochedale South street after an argument over a long-standing family conflict, only hours after bashing a supermarket employee and attempting to shoplift, a court has heard.
NSW man Harley Rawiri, 33, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on November 18 to common assault, theft and dangerous conduct with a weapon.
The court heard that on June 7, 2022, Rawiri was in a Coles supermarket and attempted to shoplift items to the value of $188.
A staff member noticed and grabbed the shopping bag off Rawiri who then threw the bag at the employee and punched him in the back of the head.
The court heard that on the same day, a few hours later, Rawiri went to a home in Rochedale South to confront a man he had a history of family conflict with.
An argument broke out and he punched the man in the face, then pulled out a knife and said “I’m not f*****g around”.
Rawiri then got out a loaded, shortened firearm and pointed it at the man.
A second person came out of the house and Rawiri pointed the gun at them and then aimed it towards the house and shot twice.
When police arrived they located bullet casings, a silver flick knife and a loaded sawn-off rifle.
The court heard Rawiri was on parole when these offences were committed
Magistrate Pamela Dowse said the court does not take kindly to vigilantes who try and take justice into their own hands.
“You think you’re a law unto yourself,” she said.
“If you continue to offend upon release you’re going to find yourself in jail for a whole lot longer.”
He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison and will be eligible for parole on June 10, 2023. Rawiri had already served 160 days in custody.
