A Logan man’s extraordinary over-reaction to his wife damaging his car, saw him choke, push and punch her so badly she could not open her eye for three days.

Bethania man Gordon Peter Chapman pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Wednesday, September 13 to choking, common assault and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm (all domestic violence offences).

The court heard the 41-year-old trades assistant and former forklift driver from Victoria, got into a heavy altercation with his ex-wife after she damaged his car.

On July in 2022, Chapman was having drinks with his partner at Fitzy’s in Waterford and as they were walking home he ran up behind her, pushed to the ground and repeatedly pushed her head into the ground while on top of her.

Chapman demanded the woman admit to damaging his car.

Later that same month on July 16, the couple were at the Beenleigh Bowls Club and Royal Hotel, highly intoxicated, and shared half a bottle of whiskey when they returned home.

Once home, Chapman pushed the victim onto the car, grabbed her neck and squeezed it until she could not breathe.

He also repeatedly kicked her in the ribs then dragged her across the street by her arm and punched her.

While inside their home, he pulled out a knife and forced her to place her hand on it, so her fingerprints were on the handle and later stabbed himself with the blade.

The court heard the victim was in hospital for six days, could not open her eye for three days and needed the neighbour’s assistance.

She suffered a displaced fracture of her rib, bruising and swelling of her right arm, scratches to the side of her face and injuries to her temple.

The woman’s eyebrow also required stitches and so did her ear.

Crown prosecutor Elise Sargent said the repeated attacks were concerning.

“It was prolonged instance of violence and the defendant comes before the court with a history of violence,” she said.

Judge Terry Gardiner said Chapman’s behaviour was extraordinarily cowardly and violent.

He sentenced him to three years prison, to be released on parole immediately.

Chapman had already served 422 days of pre-sentence custody and had not offended for eight years prior to this attack.
