A Toowoomba man has been jailed after going on a rampage through Beenleigh while high on meth, crashing into multiple cars before getting out of his car armed with a machete.

Rockville man Glenn Martin Cairns, 45, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday to two counts of going armed to cause fear and single counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, possessing dangerous drugs and obstructing a police officer.

The court heard Cairns was travelling in a blue Holden Cruze in Eagleby when he crashed into four vehicles at a roundabout near the Pacific Mwy on-ramp about 10.30am on March 15.

He drove dangerously around the roundabout, ramming cars, and continued to drive towards Beenleigh despite his car being significantly damaged.

The court heard he then crashed his car into a power pole and hit a guard rail head-on before getting out of the car with a set of scissors and machete in his hand.

Police arrived on the scene, and he was found in possession of meth.

The court heard he had a 10-page criminal history and was subject to a period of probation at the time of the offending.

Cairns’ lawyer told the court his client, who is on a disability support pension, didn’t recall much of the incident due to his drug use.

“Although he had a lengthy history for dangerous drugs, he doesn’t have any history for dangerous operation or going armed … the violent offending seems to be very much out of character for him,” he said.

Magistrate Clare Kelly said it would have been a “very distressing” incident for all drivers and witnesses involved.

She sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment with a parole release date on September 14 and the 52 days he spent in pre-sentence custody was declared time served under the sentence.

He was also ordered to complete 40 hours of unpaid community service and disqualified from driving for six months.
