A Logan man’s machete-wielding drive by on his partner’s ex-lover has landed him in court, after almost running over the victim with his car while brandishing the weapon out the window.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Friday, July 14 that Ethan McKavangh-Crofts drove aggressively at the victim, swerving and narrowly avoiding them, on April 6.

The victim was the ex-lover of his current partner and he was abusing him over text message the night of the attack.

The court heard McKavangh-Crofts was rambling incoherently to the man and making threats.

The 22-year-old Park Ridge man showed up at the victim’s house in Loganholme in his red Honda Accord.

Dashcam footage tendered to the court captured McKavangh-Crofts driving at the victim and his partner as he said “I’m going to run the c--t over”.

He then hung out the window with a machete and swung it at the pair.

McKavangh-Crofts was also pulled over by police on April 23 in Waterford West after driving dangerously through red lights and crossing over traffic islands while intoxicated.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle and one count of using a carriage service to menace or harass.

McKavangh-Crofts also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon, going armed as to cause fear and driving while over the middle alcohol limit.

Magistrate Cameron McKenzie acknowledged the defendant had no criminal history but said the offending was very serious.

“This vigilante style offending is a great concern to the community,” he said.

“It is lucky nobody was hurt. How nobody was injured from your reckless driving is beyond belief.”

Mr McKenzie considered imposing a custodial sentence but after deliberating over McKavangh-Crofts’ young age and lack of criminal history, he suspended the prison sentence.

“If you were only two years older, you would be spending time in jail for three to six months.

“Consider yourself lucky.”

McKavangh-Crofts was sentenced to six months prison, wholly suspended for 18 months and placed on probation.

He was also Fined $150 and his driving licence was suspended for 18 months.
