A prisoner’s two and a half-hour carnage where he shattered glass with a broomstick over an officer’s face has landed him in court.

Dylan James Pearse, 26, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Tuesday May 30 to serious assault of a corrective services officer and a police officer causing bodily harm and enter premises with intent.

The court heard Pearse, from Woodridge, was in Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre on August 1, 2021 when he planned an attack on officers in the exercise yard.

He tied bed sheets to the entrance to prevent anyone entering and then smashed the glass window of the officer’s station with a broomstick.

The court heard glass shattered and showered a female officer, puncturing her eye.

Pearse also threw steel nail clippers repeatedly at the window and the attack lasted for two hours.

On March 18 last year, Pearse broke into an elderly couple’s home by kicking down the door, then rummaged through their property before leaving on foot.

He was then at a Logan shopping centre and rammed a trolley into a glass door while under the influence of methamphetamine.

Police arrested Pearse and he assaulted a watch-house officer while he was being held in custody.

The court heard officers tried to move Pearse to a different cell and he reacted violently, punching an officer in the face and missing another officer with his fist.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said this behaviour was concerning and alarming.

“This was a gratuitous, violent attack, police officers are not punching bags” he said.

“Taking drugs is not an excuse for this behaviour.

Judge Chowdhury said prison officers need to be protected.

“Prisons need to be maintained in a strict, orderly manner. Officers have a difficult job and they are in a vulnerable position.

“This officer was lucky she didn’t lose an eye.”

Pearse was sentenced to two years prison, wholly suspended for two years.

He was released on strict probation conditions and must attend counselling and report regularly.

He had already served two years of pre-sentence custody.
