A young father’s disgusting, drunken act in a bottle shop has earned him a scolding by a magistrate and a jail term for his “abhorrent’’ behaviour.

A young father’s disgusting, drunken act in a bottle shop has seen him scolded by a magistrate and handed a jail term for the “abhorrent’’ behaviour.

Father-of-one Dunia Kanamaharage, 26, opened a bottle of whisky at Logan Central’s Liquorland shop, took a large mouthful and spat it at the cashier, Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on Thursday (May 11).

The incident happened on February 3.

The court heard Kanamaharage also spat the Jameson Irish Whiskey on the ground and then walked out with the bottle before being chased by the Liquorland employee.

Magistrate Terry Duroux scolded the father for his behaviour.

“It was abhorrent, disgraceful behaviour and thankfully you didn’t hit the person (with the sputum),” he said.

“Camels spit, humans do not spit.

“You are still a young offender, however. You’re only 26, but you need to something about your drinking or you will be in a world of hurt.”

Kanamaharage pleaded guilty to common assault, public nuisance and unauthorised dealing with shop goods.

Senior Constable Cody Jones said the man’s unhygienic behaviour was particularly concerning.

“This is disgusting behaviour and at a time where society is very aware of flu symptoms and the like,” he said.

The court heard Kanamaharage struggled with alcohol use, particularly spirits.

He was sentenced to six months’ prison but immediately released on parole.

Kanamaharage had already served 43 days of pre-sentence custody.

He was ordered to pay $61 in restitution to the bottle store.
