A Logan couple is just days away from completing an incredible five-year transformation from owning a beloved food-truck servicing southeast Queensland markets to opening a brick-and-mortar gourmet doughnut store.
On February 20, Shailer Park residents Darren and Stacey Kelly will throw open the doors at 3/3 Cupania Street, Daisy Hill, to Doughnut World.
Mr Kelly, who founded the business in 2016 as the Minus 32 ice cream truck, confessed to increasing nerves as opening day approached.
“It’s our first time opening a brick-and-mortar store,” he told the Albert & Logan News.
“When we were doing online deliveries only, there was no responsibility, you could take time off whenever, but now we’ll be in-store everyday.”
Mr Kelly explained the journey from dishing up rolled ice cream, which famously freezes at -32 degrees Celsius – hence the name – to gourmet doughnuts.
“Our first market was Eats and Beats Logan,” he said.
“We noticed there was no doughnuts at markets we would go to, so we started doing them, and they proved more popular than the ice cream.
“Because markets are on the weekend, we never had anything to do during the week, so my wife and I started delivering doughnuts.
“And it just took off.”
The pair have been delivering doughnuts for more than two years now, servicing Brisbane to the Gold Coast, and exchanged their food truck for a shipping container in their backyard which has been converted into a kitchen.
“But even that got too busy, so we thought, ‘Let’s get a shop’,” Mr Kelly said.
The takeoff of their doughnut business also prompted the rebrand from Minus 32 to Doughnut World.
Doughnut World Daisy Hill will offer its famous ‘doughnut bouquets’, one of its biggest sellers online, for special occasions; milk- and thickshakes; and, of course, doughnuts galore.
In terms of most popular doughnuts, Mr Kelly said you “can’t beat Nutella”.
