New study shows coffee is good for the heart

A Logan cafe announced late last year as one of the best in Queensland has been crowned best cafe in Logan by readers of the Albert & Logan News in our reader poll.

After more than 30 cafes were nominated, from Springwood down to Jimboomba, Extraction Artisan Coffee at Slacks Creek can now add another distinction to its heaving list of accomplishments since its founding in 2016.

Co-owner Heather Scott, who owns Extraction with partner Alex Milosevic, Logan residents of two decades, said the pair’s “dream” was to bring specialty coffee to the region.

But it wasn’t smooth sailing for the pair: they had to fight and scrimp and scrap to turn their dream into reality.

“We had to sell our house and pretty much everything we owned to make it happen and in fact, just before we opened we ran out of money, so we crowd-funded to buy our coffee machine and our first lot of green beans,” Ms Scott said.

“We raised $26,000 in four weeks which totally blew our mind.”

Ms Scott said the secret to Extraction’s success lies in their relationships, both front of house and at the back-end.

“We buy the best green beans we can and have worked hard over the last four years developing relationships with green bean importers and producers,” she said.

“And our team is very customer service focused. It’s important to us that people leave us feeling valued, like they have found a home away from home.”

In terms of looking ahead, Ms Scott said one recent addition has opened up a world of possibilities which brings their dedicated kitchen staff into play.

“We have recently opened up our deck on the back of the building overlooking Slacks Creek,” she said.

“It’s a beautiful green space and we are looking to use this more in the future with evening dinners.”

Extraction also has plans to move into the wholesale roasting business.

Ms Scott said she and her team are grateful for the place they have found in the Logan community.

“Support from our locals means absolutely everything to us,” she said.

“We feel a great responsibility to give back to our local community and in return we have gained some truly beautiful relationships.”
