After chowing down on more than 160 poached and fried eggs, close to 100 rashers of bacon, and countless potato hash cakes, The Courier-Mail has named Queensland’s Top 50 Cafes.
From small suburban haunts where coffee roasted on site is the star, to flash inner-city eateries where breakfast is an almost fine-dining affair, our list covers them all.
Following the most tumultuous year for the hospitality scene, with venues forced to shut, pivot to takeaway and then reopen with restricted numbers, we wanted to celebrate the ones who triumphed.
The ones who stared adversity in the face and came out stronger for it.
These are the cafes which made our list.
The cafes, which despite trying circumstances, continued to put customers first.
Who delivered terrific food and drinks and warm and caring customer service in an environment you want to come back to time and time again.
Coming out on top this year was Brisbane suburban favourite Farm House in Kedron.
The inner north cafe is more popular than a free sausage sizzle, attracting hordes of hungry diners each day to its charming, timber-trimmed, glamorous, country-style shed in the city.
With an all-day menu that heroes local produce and farmers, customers can choose anything from breakfast gnocchi to a Queensland mango and coconut panna cotta with house made granola.
Owners Amanda and John Scott have recorded their busiest days in the cafe’s history post-COVID lockdowns and say they are chuffed to be named Queensland best cafe of 2020.
“You just do your job every day to the best of your ability and it’s not without its problems and you don’t always get it right, but we always try our best,” said John.
Ensuring the cafe claimed top spot was the team of young, altruistic staff, who offer casual but fine dining level service in the relaxed setting.
“It’s not a business we’re just an extended family,” Amanda said.
“The way an extended family works is an extremely good business model. We don’t have staff, we just have our team. We don’t have a boss, we just have a coach.”
