From the surprise closure of Howard Smith Wharves fine diner Arc, named Queensland’s best in last year’s Delicious.100 to the shock termination of South Bank’s riverfront Stokehouse Q, some of Brisbane’s top hospitality operators have shut their doors for good in 2020.
While some blamed the pandemic for their end, such as celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Kitchen, which had twice been saved from liquidation, others closed before COVID had even begun.
Pony Dining in Brisbane City’s famous Eagle Street Pier precinct announced its end in January, citing a huge drop in revenue as patrons left the former CBD hub in favour of dining and lifestyle precinct Howard Smith Wharves.

While just last month, iconic CBD watering hole The Stock Exchange Hotel on Edward St revealed it would be serving its last drinks on December 13, after operators The Riversdale Group inferred new COVID-related dining restrictions had made the business unviable.
Icons of the dining scene have also closed and changed hands in 2020, with Brisbane riverfront Italian Il Centro being taken over by restaurateur Tom Sanceau and his Happy Fat Group.
The Eagle Street Pier space is set to be transformed into coastal Italian eatery Coppa, which will open early next year.

Smaller operators across the River City also closed their doors in 2020.
There was the ambitious Lodger Kitchen & Bar in the inner-north suburb of Albion, run by hospitality young guns Blair Gillespie and Daniel Collins.
The first hospitality venture for the pair with fine dining experience folded just two years after opening.

While other operators chose to sell up and move on to other projects, like Camilla Henriksen, who sold her tiny corner cafe Chapel Park in Nundah, with a new owner reopening it as Luna Bean Cafe and Bakery.
