A new resraurant known for its sweet treats will open its first dine-in dessert bar in Jimboomba this month.

Crunchy’s Waffles founder Shirley Tonnaer said she picked the rural Logan suburb for her flagship store after falling in love with the region.

Crunchy’s All-Day Desserts Cafe is due to open mid-October pending Covid-19 restrictions.

The 32-year-old moved from the Netherlands to Australia six years ago.

“I have a masters degree in marketing and spent most of my working life in corporate. At 26 I knew I didn’t want to be stuck in an office job in Europe for the rest of my life, so I decided to completely overhaul my life and move to Australia to start my own business,” Ms Tonnaer said.

“Since I was 16 years old I have had several jobs working in lolly shops and ice cream parlours, so waffles were the natural choice for me.”

Ms Tonnaer started by selling the sweet treats from a marquee at markets and then from a 1980s Leyland Atlantean Double Decker bus in 2017.

Ms Tonnaer said her bus business has built a loyal following over the years.

“As more and more patrons were asking us where our shop was so they could visit us more often, I started thinking about adding a fixed premise,” she said.

“That’s how Crunchy’s All-Day Desserts cafe was born. Jimboomba was one of the first places I lived after coming to Australia, and considering how fast it is growing and how many young families are settling in the area, I thought it was a great place to start a business.”

The businesswoman said her goal was to create a unique space in Jimboomba where people of all ages could come and relax and catch up with friends and family.

“The cafe will also be open late, so there are more options to go to,” she said.

“The focus will be on freshly made products are made fresh and cooked to order.”

On the menu will be Belgian waffles, Pofferjes, crepes and sundaes.

It won’t be all about the sugar though with plenty of savoury options available as well including savoury waffles, paninis, croissants and freshly baked baguettes.

“For the adults we will also serve liqueur sundaes, boozy milkshakes, craft Belgian beers, wine, and cocktails to accompany our grazing platters,” Ms Tonnaer said.

Construction is underway, and Ms Tonnaer said the cafe would open in mid-October at the Jimboomba Central Shopping Centre.

“The cafe is taking shape really quickly. We’re currently in the process of hiring which will be finalised shortly,” she said.

“With all the Covid restrictions happening as we speak, we can’t commit a final opening date yet, but we will keep everyone informed through our socials. We are aiming to open mid-October.

“We’re planning to hire around 10 people at this point, from baristas to wait staff and kitchen hands.

“Without Covid restrictions we can seat up to 40 people inside, and 80 outside.”

Planned opening hours are:

Monday – Thursday – 7am to late

Friday and Saturday – 7am to late

Sunday – 7am to 8pm
