A young parolee from Logan Central has landed back in court after police surveillance teams tracked him in a stolen car from the Gold Coast.

Desmond Peter Gorry, 25, appeared in custody in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to one charge of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The court heard the victim parked his car at Surfers Paradise and hid the car key on the car, which was later taken on Friday, February 11.

The victim was trying to organise a spare key when an unknown person came and drove off in the car. The victim gave chase but was unable to do anything about it.

A couple of days later, police spotted the stolen vehicle in Woodridge and observed two men get out of the car who were tracked by PolAir on Sunday, February 13.

Police spoke to Gorry about the matter, and he told them he had been a passenger in the car and knew it was stolen.

Magistrate Louise Shephard said Gorry had a lengthy criminal history littered with offences for unlawfully using motor vehicles.

She said these fresh offences occurred while he was still on court-ordered parole, making it an aggravating feature.

Gorry’s lawyer told the court he was a single Indigenous man who wasn’t currently working and was on Newstart Allowance.

He said he had family who lived in the Ipswich area, including his father and sister but his mother had recently passed away.

Magistrate Louise Shephard sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment with an immediate parole eligibility date.
