A man’s frustration when his fiance did not want to go to the pub ended with him punching her in the face and then stalking her for months, a court has heard.

Daniel James Gough, 33, told his fiance “I’m going to neck you” at one point in a month-long period of stalking and verbal intimidation, Beenleigh District Court heard on Friday (May 5). Gough picked up his fiance from a social event in South Bank in March, 2022 and told her he wanted to go the pub,’’ the court was told.

She refused, which led to a heated argument where he punched her in the face, causing a black eye and blood nose.

“This is your fault for not going to the pub,” he said to her in their car.

The court heard the 23-year-old woman was taken to hospital, but Gough told her to lie about how she received her injuries.

Gough, from Capalaba, began stalking his ex-fiance once they broke up, between May and June 2022.

He followed her outside her workplace then called and said she “looked nice today”.

He also threatened he would put cameras around her house and threatened to kill her.

The court heard that on one occasion he approached her and asked to sleep with her.

He then said the domestic violence order she had against him was just a piece of paper.

Gough pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence) and five counts of unlawful stalking with violence.

Judge Terry Gardiner said Gough’s attempts to stay out of prison were not good enough.

“You have made poor attempts at rehabilitation and have an appalling criminal history,” he said.

Gough was sentenced to two years and 11 months’ jail and was due for release on parole May 21 this year.

He had already served 318 days of pre-sentence custody.
