A 62-year-old Logan man preyed on a disabled teen girl when he sexually abused her while they both were inpatients at a mental hospital, a court has heard.

Anthony Raymond Hammond, 62, abused the 18-year-old girl in the mental health ward at Logan Hospital.

Beenleigh District Court heard on Wednesday (May 3) that the Logan Central man approached the girl in 2021 as they were sitting outside in the courtyard and asked her for a hug.

The victim had a mental disability and was under Government protection because of her disability.

As Hammond hugged her, he touched her inappropriately. She tried to get away but he held her.

Hammond then said “let me show you my penis” and demanded sexual acts from the teen girl.

She told him there were cameras and people could see, so he took her to a corner area out of view of the cameras.

Hammond was arrested about two weeks later and pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault.

Judge Brian Devereaux said the offending was particularly concerning because the victim could not easily get away.

“This was persistent sexual assault in an enclosed space and the victim didn’t have the freedom to walk away, like in a public place,” he said.

“It was a deliberate action of an offensive nature against an 18-year-old girl.

“It was also intrusive and no doubt embarrassing.”

Hammond was sentenced to 350 days in prison and immediately released, having served 349 days of pre-sentence custody.
