The surprising history of meth

A young Logan labourer who spent three months on the run from police on a slew of drug and weapon charges has been arrested after a dramatic police chase on Friday night.

Park Ridge man Coen James Madden Spooner, 27, applied for bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.

He is charged with 22 offences, which include permitting use of place, possessing a Schedule 3 quantity of a Schedule 1 dangerous drug, dangerous operation of a vehicle, supplying a dangerous drug, three counts of possessing a weapon, three counts of possessing a dangerous drug, two counts of possessing ammunition and possessing the suspected proceeds of a drug offence, inter alia.

The court heard Madden Spooner had been on the police radar since a search warrant on December 8 last year allegedly uncovered a cornucopia of illicit drugs and weapons.

Police allege the search warrant uncovered 60g of a “crystal substance”, cannabis, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB aka ‘fantasy’), a shotgun, a handgun, tasers and $6000 cash.

He was charged with additional offences including dangerous operation of a vehicle and possessing dangerous drugs following his arrest on Friday.

The court was told Mr Madden Spooner was arrested when he crashed his vehicle and fled on foot after a police chase.

He was arrested a short distance away.

The court heard in the three months between the search warrant and Mr Madden Spooner’s arrest, police made “many attempts to locate the defendant”, who they alleged was “actively avoiding” them.

Defence lawyer James Bakker told the court his client was “drug dependent”.

He said his client would be contesting the more serious drug charges.

“There are issues around possession, he wasn’t residing in the house the whole time because he was also caring for his grandmother,” Mr Bakker said.

“We are also waiting on an analysis certificate which means the (Schedule 1 possession charge) may be downgraded.”

Magistrate Clare Kelly questioned him on this submission, noting the bail affidavit suggested police had DNA and fingerprint evidence.

She also said the combination of “drugs, money and guns” posed a “significant risk” to the community.

She refused Mr Madden Spooner’s bail application.

His charges will next be mentioned on May 5.
