A Logan family is facing a bleak Chriatmas after an unforeseen brain bleed led to a young mother being twice placed into an induced coma before surgery left her left side paralysed.
Marsden’s Paige Beazley, 24, also suffered personality changes after the operation to save her life.
The saga began on November 2 when she suffered a brain bleed while out on her usual morning walk with her four-year-old and eighteen-month-old children.
Her partner Liam King was at work at the time.
Family friend Kellie Deveney said Ms Beazley collapsed and was taken to Logan Hospital where the haemorrhage was diagnosed.
“She was diagnosed quite quickly after a scan and then underwent emergency surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane,” Mrs Deveney said.
Doctors found she a condition called a brain arteriovenous malformation had disrupted the arteries which carried oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain.
“Some people with a brain AVM experience signs and symptoms such as headaches or seizures — Paige experienced neither,” Mrs Deveney said.
Her friend was placed in an induced coma for 10 days but developed a throat infection and was placed in another coma for a further four days.
“Thankfully, Paige has pulled through. However she now faces 18 months in hospital for special rehab to teach her how to walk, talk and care for herself again,” Mrs Deveney said.
“She has been left with partial paralysis on her left side of her body as well as cognitive damage to her emotions.’’
Mr King said he is now solely caring for their two children and devoting his energy to her recovery.
“Because the bleed has affected her brain she is very emotional and lacks a filter (but) me and the little ones are powering on,” he said.
“My favourite thing about Paige is her smile.’’
Mrs Denevey has started a GoFundMe page to support the family.
Funds raised would help with medical expenses, childcare fees and everyday expenses such as hospital parking and medication, Mrs Deveney said.
“This Christmas the children won’t have their beautiful mum home and their beach and camping trips will be a while coming,” she said.
